“Normal Wear and Tear”: The 4 Words That Kill Your Warranty Claim

You bought an extended warranty because you knew your car was getting older. You wanted protection against the inevitable breakdowns that happen at 80,000 miles.

So why did your claim just get denied for “Normal Wear and Tear”?

This is the industry’s favorite loophole. Most Vehicle Service Contracts have a clause stating they only cover Mechanical Breakdowns. They explicitly exclude parts that fail due to age or deterioration.

The Subjective Trap

The problem is that everything on a car wears out eventually.

  • The Bushing: If a rubber suspension bushing cracks, they call it “wear.”
  • The Window Motor: If it gets slow before it stops, they call it “wear.”
  • The Piston Rings: If your car burns oil, they call it “carbon buildup” or “wear.”

They use this gray area to deny claims on the very vehicles that need coverage the most. They want to define “breakdown” as something snapping in half. If it just wore out, they say it’s your maintenance responsibility.

We Know the Counter-Argument

The difference between a “paid claim” and a “denied claim” is often the language used by the mechanic.

If a mechanic tells the adjuster, “The control arm bushings are cracked from age,” the claim is denied. If we tell the adjuster, “The control arm bushing has experienced a structural separation causing excessive play and safety failure,” it is often approved.

We know the definitions. We know the difference between “wear” (which happens slowly) and “failure” (which happens when a part no longer performs its function).

Don’t let an adjuster tell you that a broken part is just “getting old.” Bring it to VehicleWarranty.Services, where we fight for the coverage you paid for.
